Jordanians & Palestinians, The Roots of Hatred

It took 100,000 Brave Bedouins to explain the roots of hatred between Jordanians and Palestinians. It also took 200 Sheiks and the New York Times unbelievably rich Archives. It was all in an article dating back to 1936.

The title was 100,000 BEDOUINS SET TO AID ARABS. From Amman, Trans-Jordan. I felt the passion I long forgot. Remembered dreams long forgotten and sensed the defiant dust of Arabia in this article.

Originally published in June 27 1936, the short article in the NY Times states: “a meeting of desert sheiks resulted in a decision”… “They are ready to join Arabs of Palestine in their guerrilla warfare against the Jews and the British”.

“ After a meeting of 200 sheiks, leaders of desert tribes, one of them said:
“We must go to the aid of Arabs in Palestine. We are all one people. These are our lands.
“Freedom for Trans-Jordan is useless without freedom for Palestine. Talk and strikes have won nothing. We must cross the Jordan and win Palestine back from the Jews and the British.”

For me the article is heart breaking, it is not only an isolated historical event, it is sad to see that simple people understood the political equation so clearly. "We are all one people"; I was amazed by their bravery and sense of honor.

To me the question on origin of hatred between Jordanians and Palestinians… between all Arab nations was answered… The Roots of Hatred are NON-EXISTENT… Such poisonous roots are imported... they were grown and raised in fertile lands far away in Europe, British soil… In lands that are nothing like the Arabian Desert…

Although sad at the thought that people still adopted such alien ideas… I felt so proud reading how 71 years ago Bedouins were more civilized than PhD holders, Parliament members and renowned writers…

I wish I knew what had happened to those brave men, I wish I knew the names of those brave Sheiks who spoke so passionately in that meeting… I wish the new so-called “leaders of the Arab world” would look back to a meeting on a sunny day in the spring of 1936 and learn from Bedouins in the heart of the Arabian Desert, Seventy One Years ago… For "we are all one"… and borders exist only on paper and in poisoned minds…

I saw 100,000 Bedouins, 200 Sheiks with determination and glimmer in their eyes… I heard the pride in their voices as they spoke “We must go to the aid of Arabs in Palestine. We are all one people... ” I wish you would see, hear and feel the same…

Great post,
The roots of hatred goes back to the 70's black september, if we can solve the issues behind it we can get over "the hatred" that exists in the hearts of some people.

hamede,
Thanks for the info. I'll look him up...

Arabiat,
I think Black Sep is just a product of the previous partitioning by Britain & France... If we thought of ourselves as one, it might have never evolved... Another thing is we must never confuse governments with people, in our part of the world governments do not necessarily express their people..
